Application Process for Behr penetrating oil stain
Applying Behr's penetrating oil stains requires attention to detail but rewards you with beautiful results.
Surface preparation: Clean the deck thoroughly with a deck cleaner to remove dirt, mildew, and grayed wood fibers. If old stain is present, you may need a stripper. The wood must be completely dry—wait at least 24 hours after cleaning, longer if humid.
Testing absorption: Before staining, sprinkle water on the wood. It should soak in within minutes. If water beads up, the wood isn't ready to accept stain and needs more cleaning or weathering time. For best results use a Moisture Meter to check for moisture, and stay below 15% on the deck boards.
Application method: Use a brush, roller, or pump sprayer. We prefer applying with a pad applicator or roller and back-brushing immediately to work the stain into the wood. This ensures maximum penetration and even coverage.
One coat is typical: Unlike water-based stains, you usually apply just one coat of penetrating oil stain. The wood absorbs what it can, and additional coats often just sit on the surface.
Drying time: Allow 24-48 hours for walking traffic and 48-72 hours before replacing furniture. The stain needs to fully cure for optimal protection. Don't apply if rain is expected within 24 hours. HOWEVER Behr has a 4 hour rain window, meaning if it rains 4 hours after the stain has been applied, your deck is perfectly protected.
Temperature considerations: Apply when temperatures are between 40-90°F.
