How to Stain an Ipe Deck the Right Way

Ipe is one of the most beautiful and durable hardwoods you can use for a deck. Its rich, natural color and incredible strength make it a top choice for homeowners who want a long-lasting outdoor space. But because Ipe is so dense, it needs a little extra care when it comes to staining. The right process—and the right oil—will help protect your deck and bring out the wood’s stunning natural grain.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to stain an Ipe deck using Penofin Hardwood Oil or DeckWise Ipe Oil.

Step 1: Clean the Deck

Before applying any oil, it’s important to start with a clean surface.

  1. Sweep off dirt, leaves, and debris.

  2. Wash the deck using a wood cleaner or brightener designed for hardwoods. These products remove surface grime, gray weathering, and prepare the wood fibers to accept oil.

  3. Scrub with a stiff brush if needed, then rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or low-pressure washer.

Step 2: Let the Deck Dry

Ipe is very dense, and moisture inside the wood can block oil absorption. After cleaning, allow the deck to dry completely.

  • Wait at least 24–48 hours in dry weather.

  • Check that the wood feels dry to the touch before moving on.

Patience here will give you a much better end result.

Step 3: Apply Penofin or DeckWise Ipe Oil

Both Penofin Hardwood Oil and DeckWise Ipe Oil are excellent choices for Ipe. They are formulated to penetrate dense tropical hardwoods and enhance their natural beauty.

  1. Stir the oil well before use.

  2. Apply a thin, even coat using a brush, pad applicator, or clean cloth. Work with the grain of the wood.

  3. Do not over-apply. With Ipe, less is more—one light coat is usually enough.

  4. After 20–30 minutes, wipe off any excess oil with a clean rag. Leaving extra oil on the surface can create a sticky finish.

Step 4: Allow to Cure

Let the oil cure and soak into the wood for 24 hours before placing furniture back or walking heavily on the deck. The finish should look rich and natural, not shiny or glossy.

Step 5: Maintain the Finish

With Ipe, regular maintenance keeps the deck looking fresh. Expect to reapply oil about once a year, or sooner if the wood begins to gray or lose its water-repellent properties. A quick clean and light recoat is usually all that’s needed.

Why Oil Is Better for Ipe

Unlike film-forming stains, penetrating oils like Penofin and DeckWise are designed to work with the dense structure of hardwoods. They soak into the surface, highlighting the grain while still allowing the wood to breathe. This prevents peeling, flaking, or surface buildup over time.
