What is this build up? Lichen

This type of growth on your deck is lichen. Lichen is a combination of fungus and algae (or cyanobacteria) living together in a symbiotic relationship. It's common on wood surfaces in damp or shaded environments. The mix of white, gray, and yellowish patches is typical of several lichen species.

Is it harmful? Deck build up

  • To the wood: Lichen itself doesn't damage wood directly, but it can hold moisture against the surface, which may contribute to wood rot over time.

  • To humans/pets: It's generally harmless.

What you can do:

  1. Remove it:

    • Scrub with a stiff brush and a mixture of water and mild detergent or white vinegar.

    • For more stubborn growth, use a deck cleaner formulated to remove mold, mildew, and algae.

    • We professionally remove this type of build up by pre-soaking the wood then lightly scraping the build up off the deck. Followed by a Behr wood cleaner product, let that soak in and wash off with a pressure washer.

  2. Prevent it:

    • Improve sun exposure or airflow to the area.

    • Seal or stain your deck regularly to protect the wood.

Take a look after we applied Berh wood cleaner, soaked it and washed it off with a pressure washer.
